The Rand (R) is the official currency of
South Africa.
It is subdivided into 100 cents.
The denominations are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50,
100 and 200 Rand
In South Africa there are banks, bureaux de
change and automatic tellers all over.
All major credit cards can be used in South
Africa, with American Express and Diners Club enjoying less
universal acceptance than MasterCard and Visa.
There are ATMs in most large towns. Tourists
should be aware that con artists are known to operate at ATMs and
should take neccesary precautions.
Travellers cheques and some foreign
currencies are accepted at larger hotels and shops, but commission
is charged.
The banks are generally open from 9am to
3.30pm Mondays through Fridays, and 8.30am to 11am on Saturdays,
