Here to make things a little easier for you we have divided Chile into 6 geographical zones, from the top of the country going down they are, Big North (top), Small North, Center, South, Austral and Magallanes(bottom). Big North Contains the I and II political regions. This zone is mostly desert and highlands. The principal cities are Arica and Antofagasta. Also in this zone you will find San Pedro de Atacama, the El Tatío Geyser, saltpetreses and archaeological remains of Andean Cultures. Small North Embraces the regions of Atacama Coquimbo. In this zone there is much contrast between the desert and the fertile valleys. If you are interested in the stars it is a great place for astronomical observations and touristic activities. There are several beach resorts located here too. Center Includes the Valparaíso, Libertador Gral. Bernardo O'Higgins, Maule, and Metropolitan regions. This zone has a mild climate, which is good for agriculture, it is also the zone of the wine country and Chilean fruits. The zone also encompasses the renowned Viña del Mar beach resort and the best ski centers of South America. South Contains the Bío-Bío, Araucanía and most of Los Lagos regions. the landscape turns greener and climate is wet. This is where you will find the famous Lake District. The most common attractions are : hot springs, lakes, ski, adventure. North Patagonia embraces part of Los Lagos and the Aysén regions. You will discover that this zone in Chile breaks into big and small islands, with the most visited : Chiloe, and many attractions as the Austral Road, Elizalde lake, the Futaleufu river and San Rafael Glacier. South Patagonia includes the Magallanes regions and the Chilean Antarctic Territory. The climate is not welcoming, yet here we find unspoiled wilderness and solitude. you can visit Torres del Paine National Park, Tierra del Fuego, the Magallanes Strait, and Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of the World, and the pristine Antarctica. And of course if you have travelled this far then take in the mystical head statues of easter Island. Lanchile Airlines fly a boeing 767 to Easter Island from Tahiti and Santiago twice weekly. In the peak season (Dec - March) extra flights are added. |
