Brasilia is not only a planned city. It is a planned capital. Brasilia is the the capital of Brazil and was inaugurated on April 22nd 1960. it is located in the centre of Brazil. It seems hard to imagine that only five years before, the area resembled a desert, with no people, scarce water, few animals and plants. In 1956, when Juscelino Kubitschek became President , he invited the best Brazilian architects to present projects for the new capital. One of the modern day famous world's architects, Oscar Niemeyer, combined straight and rounded shapes to create innovative architectural masterpieces. To compliment these architectural masterpieces, Lucio Costa, reknowned Brazilian urbanist, devised a lay-out combining beauty, simplicity and functionality. Some of the places of interest include Churches and Temples such as: Cathedral. In 1988 it was painted white, and its glass windows were replaced by colored ones. Dom Bosco Sanctuary. Military Cathedral; Igreja Nossa Senhora de Fátima ('Our Lady of Fatima Church'), usually called "Igrejinha" ('Small Church'). LBV Ecumenic temple.
Buildings and Monuments: Praça dos Três Poderes ('Square of the Three Powers'); Palácio da Alvorada ('Palace of Dawn'), the official residence of the President; Catetinho . National Theatre (Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro); Cultural Complex of the Republic (Complexo Cultural da República) Some of the positive things about Brazil to consider before you visit is that there is virtually no air pollution, there are many and large green areas, and a good climate: The temperature is very pleasant all year round, and sunny days with beautiful sunsets are very common. |
