In a high valley of the Himalayas, Thimphu town, the capital of Bhutan, is located. It is in the western part of the country and is the market center for agricultural goods produced in the surrounding valley. Manufactures include food and wood products. India is on the south of the country and this and other parts of the country are connected to Thimphu by a highway system. There are no airport or railroad connections to the town. The royal palace and one of the country's largest monasteries are here. Formerly the winter capital (Punakha was the summer capital), |
