Bhutan is nestled in the heart of the great Himalaya and has for centuries remained aloof from the rest of the world.

Since its doors were cautiously opened in 1974, visitors have been mesmerised: the environment is pristine, the scenery and architecture awesome and the people hospitable and charming.

The landscape consists of a succession of lofty and rugged mountains and deep valleys. In the north, towering peaks reach a height of 24,000 ft (7,315 m).

Some parts of the Himalayas have seen the destruction of forests and loss of habitats which have undoubtedly severely reduced wildlife population.

Bhutan however harbours many endangered species mainly due to the intact forests and the fact that this small country stretches from the subtropics in the south to the perennially frozen regions of the Himalayas in the north.

Bhutan has 770 species of birds (15 globally threatened), 165 mammals (among them 24 internationally protected wild animal species) and 5500 species of vascular plants (among them 152 medical plants).
